Fitzpatrick extends the tournament and continues to win the European Masters championship with Wu Ashun T6
On September 9th, Beijing time, 24-year-old English golfer Matthew Fitzpatrick played until the extended round of the European Masters today. In the first add hole match, he caught a bird and defeated Danish golfer Lucas Biag. He successfully defended his title at the Swiss club Kleenshery Golf Club and won his fifth European Tour championship in his professional career, becoming the first consecutive victory in 40 years at the European Masters. Chinese general Wu Ashun eventually tied for 6th place.
Fitzpatrick, ranked 44th in the world, advanced to the second round of the European Masters as a leader, but swallowed two bogeys in the first six holes and was chased by Biag. Fortunately, defending champion Fitzpatrick withstood the pressure and caught five birds from behind, including a crucial 12 foot birdie push in the back hole. He hit 67 strokes (-3) and tied with a 63 strokes (-7) without a bogey. With a total score of 263 strokes (-17), the two tied for first place and had to return to hole 18 for an extended match.
In the first add hole race, Fitzpatrick caught a bird on the 18th hole of the Par 4 hole, defeated Boppa's Biag, and won the European Masters the following year, becoming the first Spanish legend Sevi Bayesdros to win a consecutive victory at the European Masters since 1977 and 1978.
"This is what I want to achieve this season, to win the championship again," said Fitzpatrick, who won his 5th European Tour championship in his personal career. "Winning again here is very special. Winning my 5th championship is great, and I love this place. Among all my championships, I have to say, this is definitely a difficult one to win. I didn't perform at my A-level today, even though I love this place, I just didn't perform at my best level today. I managed to hold on until later, and in the later moments, I scored some crucial birdies. I am very happy, and this is one of my good championships." At the age of 24 and 8 months, he became the young English five time European Tour champion.
Bi Yage finished second, with French player Mike Lorenzo Vera hitting 67 strokes and finishing third with a total score of 265 strokes (-15).
After three rounds of matches, Wu Ashun, who tied for third place, is still four strokes behind Fitzpatrick in the final round, and has a chance to compete for his third European Tour championship. Unfortunately, this 33 year old Fujian veteran scored 2 bogies in the first 4 holes. Although Wu Ashun scored 3 birdies, he also scored 2 bogies in the 16th hole and eventually hit a par of 70, tying for 6th place with a total score of 270 (70-65-65-70, -10).
